When I first spoke with Nera, I paid attention to what lit her up. She spoke about her and Jim’s love of neoclassical art, and as I listened, I found myself transported back to walking through the ruins of Pompeii for the first time at twenty years old. I remembered standing inches from ancient frescoes, their colors still vivid beneath the wear of time; pottery lining stone walls in varying shapes and shades of terracotta; sculpted friezes emerging from cracked stone.
Those memories became my entry point into Nera and Jim’s design. An ancient Mediterranean garden fresco became the starting point for a painting of my own, while the colors, textures and imperfections of antiquity found their way into the materials and details surrounding it.
Even before the invitation suite was complete, I knew the painting could become something larger. On the wedding day, it transformed into a sweeping backdrop that set the stage for the celebration without dominating it, a quiet container for everything that unfolded within.
