In the fall of 2023, I had the extreme privilege of being part of the creative team that brought about a familiarization trip at Red Fox Inn and Tavern and Glenstone Gardens. Profound connections were made, all while paying homage to the rugged Hunt Country lifestyle of Middleburg Virginia.
For this project, I wanted to honor the splendor of Glenstone in the fall while bringing in cozy materials, such as rust and mauve colored linens, patina textures such as bronze foil and engraved copper, and detailed nature painting. I thought an art nouveau-style approach to landscape illustration would lend itself well to the 6-color letterpress invitation card and would pay homage to the 19th and 20th century art work that adorned the walls of the venue. I was also inspired by field guides/ sketchbooks of turn of the century naturalists and hunting lodge interior design, which inspired the welcome books
For the dinner on the first evening, I leaned on the use of material to create interest so as not to compete with the pattern of the plates. I used a silk bookcloth whose color was so complex, you can’t even define it as one single color. It looked exquisite against the brown of the plates, and for an unexpected element, I added etched copper name cards that reflected the warmth of the candlelight, creating a warm, rich glow.
For the seven course meal the following day, I made small booklets featuring my autumnal illustrations and copper calligraphy.
